‘’One voice, one direction’’ is an open project run by Maria Skłodowska-Curie’s National Institute of Oncology – National Research Institute and Alliance for Innovation (AFI) based on the major partnership with National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).
Implementation of NCCN’s diagnostic and treatment guidelines may be a milestone for Polish oncologists. Clinicians around the world rely on NCCN’s documents because the frequency of actualisation makes it the most accurate and actual scientific evidence supported by expert consensus. Enhancing oncological knowledge by NCCN’s documents pushed the medicine forward. New plans regarding the creation of guidelines for each group of cancers, with consideration of future updates have emerged.
Furthermore, the project is driven by patient organisations. It’s the people working there who have incredible knowledge of what the patient journey looks like in practice and the challenges they and their families face. The first workshop of oncologists and patients was held in 2023. The objective of that gathering was to establish new treatment standards and coordinated patient care based on the patient’s real life experiences. Moreover, clinicians shared their wisdom during the workshop hence patients could educate in previously undiscovered aspects of oncology. Finally, prof. dr. hab. n. med. Piotr Rutkowski said ‘’(..) No health care system will function properly without an active and well-educated patient’’. Taking his words into account we can easily state that patients are the heart of this project.
